ASTM Committee F-27 on Snow Skiing

Abstract

In 1972, the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) issued a call for a meeting of all persons interested in writing consensus standards for skiing. In response to this call, approximately 60 people met in Cleveland, Ohio, in April 1972. Because of this interest, a subcommittee was formed to write such standards. This subcommittee was assigned to ASTM Committee F-8 on Sports Equipment and Facilities and was designated ASTM Subcommittee F08.14 on Snow Skiing. Recently, the governing bodies of ASTM have approved the elevation of the skiing subcommittee to full committee status. The new committee is designated ASTM Committee F-27 on Snow Skiing. Its elevation to committee status is a recognition of the contributions of the skiing subcommittee and provides a means for increasing the efficiency of standards writing for snow skiing. ASTM Committee F-27 is composed of persons representing all segments of the skiing community. Consumers, manufacturers, retailers, ski areas, academia, the ski press, medical doctors, consultants, and various skiing organizations are represented in this committee. Following ASTM procedures, these members work to write standards that are of service to the entire skiing community. Committee F-27 is organized into administrative subcommittees and technical subcommittees. The administrative subcommittees are the executive subcommittee, which determines policy; the ISO subcommittee, which is the ASTM liaison with the International Organization for Standardization (ISO); and the education subcommittee, which disseminates information. The technical subcommittees write standards for bindings, skis, poles, goggles, and ski boots. In addition, standard requirements for the setting, installation, and inspection of bindings are written by the technical subcommittees.
