Abstract

Introduction. Poland’s accession to the European Union led to huge alterations in the way the professions of a nurse or midwife are being perceived. Such changes were obligatory, since the Polish legal regulations should have complied with those issued by the EC. Nurses are expected to permanently upgrade their skills as well as keep their general and occupational knowledge up to date. Possessing both professional and interpersonal skills is particularly important for providing care to a chronically ill child. The most crucial activities performed by nurses/midwives include educational and preventive actions, since they play a great role in the therapeutic process of a pediatric patient. Aim. The aim of the article was to describe the current knowledge and recommendations of diagnosis, treatment and prevention of the most common chronic diseases in children, such as asthma. The study also discusses available forms of nursing care provided to children with asthma.
