Associations of Working Memory and Reading Comprehension of Normal Children in South Korea: A Meta-Analysis

Abstract

본 연구에서는 일반아동의 작업기억과 읽기이해 간 상관관계를 살펴본 국내 연구를 중심으로 메타분석을 실시하였다. 이를 위해 2022년 12월까지 주요 논문검색 사이트를 이용하여 자료를 수집하였고 총 15편의 논문을 분석자료로 선정하였다. 먼저 수집된 자료의 특성을 정리하였고, 총 15편의 분석자료에서 추출한 58개의 상관계수를 토대로 메타분석을 실시하여 전체 효과크기를 산출하였으며 작업기억의 하위요소와 학년 집단에 따라 효과크기의 유의한 차이가 나타나는지를 조절효과 분석을 통해 살펴보았다. 주요 연구결과를 살펴보면 첫째, 메타분석에 포함된 연구들은 주로 음운루프와 중앙집행기 요소를 통해 아동의 작업기억 능력을 측정하고 있는 것으로 나타났다. 둘째, 일반아동의 작업기억과 읽기이해 간 상관관계에 대한 전체 효과크기는 중간 정도인 것으로 나타났다. 셋째, 작업기억과 읽기 이해 간 상관관계의 효과크기는 학년 집단에 따라 유의한 차이가 있는 것으로 나타났다. 이를 토대로 국내에서 수행되고 있는 연구들이 아동의 작업기억 능력을 측정하는데 일부 요소만을 다루고 있음을 확인할 수 있었고, 일반아동의 작업기억 능력과 읽기이해 기술이 어느 정도 밀접한 관련이 있음을 확인할 수 있었다. 이상 본 연구의 결과는 읽기이해 과제수행과 관련한 인지적 요인으로서 아동의 작업기억 능력을 살펴보는 것이 타당함을 밝히는 근거가 될 것이고, 작업기억과 읽기이해 간의 관련성 정도가 발달 수준에 따라 달라질 수 있음을 확인시켜주었다고 볼 수 있다.In this study, a meta-analysis is conducted on the study of the correlation between working memory and reading comprehension of normal children. Data were collected to December 2022, and a total of 15 papers were selected as analysis data. The characteristics of the collected data were summarized, and a meta-analysis was performed based on 58 correlation coefficients to calculate the overall effect size. The results are as follows. First, the studies mainly measure children's working memory ability through the phonological loop and central executive components. Second, the overall effect size for the correlation between working memory and reading comprehension was medium. Third, the difference in the effect size of the correlation between working memory and reading comprehension according to grade group was statistically significant. Therefore, the studies measure children's working memory ability with some working memory components, and there is a close relationship with the working memory ability and reading comprehension skills of normal children. The results of this study will serve as a basis for clarifying the validity of examining children's working memory ability as a cognitive factor related to reading comprehension task performance.
