Abstract

Purpose: Overweight and obesity are well-known risk factors for osteoarthritis (OA) in weight-bearing joints. However, the role of overweight and obesity in OA of the non-weight-bearing joints is more controversial. We hypothesize that obesity is associated with pain, rather than structural changes, in persons with hand OA. Few hand OA studies have explored the associations between overweight/obesity and pain. Hence, the aim of this study was to explore whether body mass index (BMI) and abdominal obesity were associated with self-reported pain in the hands, hips, knees and feet as well as pain sensitization in persons with hand OA.
