Abstract

The coprophilous-ascomycete mycobiota from 163 collections of horse, cow, sheep, rabbit, and deer dung was studied. The frequency of occurrence on all substrates was examined for the 41 Ascomycetes identified ten or more times. The following associations of fungi with dung from certain animal groups were noted: four species with horse dung (Perissodactyla), three species with rabbit dung (Leporidae), and one species with cow, sheep, and deer dung (Ruminantia). Four fungi were associated with wild-animal dung, and nine species were largely restricted to domesticanimal dung. Comparisons are made between fungus-substrate relationships observed in Illinois and those reported from Britain and Sweden.
