Abstract

Objective: The G1359A polymorphism of the cannabinoid receptor 1 (CNR1) gene is associated with several cardiovascular risk factors such as obesity, insulin resistance, and dyslipidemia. This study aims to examine the association between this polymorphism and coronary artery disease (CAD) in patients with metabolic syndrome (MetS). Methods: A total of 294 patients with MetS (159 patients with CAD and 135 without CAD) were genotyped. Results: The MetS patients with CAD had higher frequencies of the GG genotype and the G allele than those without CAD. Unconditional logistic regression analysis showed that the GG genotype and the G allele of CNR1 were significantly associated with an increased risk of developing CAD in MetS patients. The GG genotype of CNR1 was significantly associated with higher body mass index (BMI), insulin resistance (IR) by homeostasis model assessment, serum triglycerides, and C-reactive protein. Conclusions: The G1359A polymorphism of CNR1 may be associated with the presence of CAD in MetS patients of Chinese Han ethnicity.
