Abstract

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) severity in PTSD correlates directly to suicidal ideation (SI), with depression as a mediator. OSA severity varies with sleep stages as the ventilatory control system sensitivity (loop gain) is significantly lower (and ventilatory control more stable) during REM versus non-REM sleep. This study examined the association of OSA and SI in PTSD patients with REM-sleep dominant OSA (REM-OSA) versus non-REM sleep dominant OSA (non-REM OSA).
