Abstract

To the Editor: Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a common chronic disease of childhood, affecting approximately 9.6 million US children.1 Identification of modifiable risk factors is important for developing effective interventions to prevent and treat AD. Previous studies have found mixed results regarding the association of obesity with AD in childhood.2 However, only a few previous studies were longitudinal. Consequently, it remains unclear whether obesity causes AD or vice versa.3,4 We investigated the association between the following: (1) overweight (≥85th body mass index-percentile) or obesity (≥95th body mass index-percentile) and AD at the age of 5, 9, and 15 years; (2) overweight or obesity at the age of 5 years and the development of AD at the age of 9 or 15 years; and (3) AD at the age of 5 years and the development of overweight or obesity at the age of 9 or 15 years.
