Abstract

Oral mucositis is one of the main oral reactions due to radiotherapy and chemotherapy. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the efficacy of the combination of low intensity laser therapy and dexamethasone elixir in the treatment of mucositis. For this, 5 patients, aged between 57 and 68 years, were selected, presenting oral mucositis. Clinical parameters of pain and healing of the affected region were evaluated using low intensity laser therapy along with dexamethasone elixir. There was a marked reduction of oral mucositis and painful symptoms from 2 sessions of the protocol. Although there has been clinical improvement reported by patients after 3 days of treatment, control should be performed in the long term. The associated treatment of laser therapy and dexamethasone elixir minimizes the effects of radiotherapy and mucositis-related chemotherapy, but further studies are needed, with a larger sample of patients and long-term follow-up.
