Abstract
The critical distances for the formation of ion pairs were calculated by a nonempirical quantum-chemical method. The results were in agreement with the Bjerrum theory. Ion pair formation in aqueous solutions of lithium and sodium chlorides was visualized, and the energies of ion pair formation calculated.
