Abstract

Objective To assess the association between HLA-DQA1 alleles and systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) in populations of Uygur nationality in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. Methods Polymerase chain reaction-sequence-specific primers (PCR-SSP) were used to analyze the HLA-DQA1 gene in 56 patients with SLE and 54 unrelated healthy controls of Uygur nationality in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. Results Compared with the healthy controls, the SLE patients showed significantly increased frequency of HLA-DQA1*0302 (χ2= 10.032, P= 0.004) , but decreased frequency of HLA-DQA1*0101 (χ2= 5.676, P= 0.017) . Conclusion HLA-DQA1*0302 may be a susceptibility gene, while HLA-DQA1*0101 may be a protective factor for SLE in populations of Uygur nationality in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. Key words: Lupus erythematosus, systemic; HLA antigens; Gene frequency; Uygur nationality; Environment
