Abstract

Previous studies have underlined the pivotal role of nutritive capillary perfusion failure for the manifestation of postischemic reperfusion injury (Menger et al., 1993). This view is based on data derived from experiments, demonstrating a considerable fraction of capillaries with persistent stasis of blood perfusion, i.e “no-reflow”, during reperfusion after prolonged periods of ischemia (Ames et al., 1968; Menger et al., 1992a; Vollmar et al, 1994).
