Abstract
The aim of the study was to evaluate the association between diagnosis Type 2 Diabetes and Obesity (T2DO) and brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) gene polymorphism 196 G/A. The association between T2DO and the G196A polymorphism in the BDNF gene has already been investigated in several case-control studies, producing contradictory results. In order to explore these contradictory findings, the authors conducted a meta-analysis along with Trial Sequential Analysis (TSA) of BDNF 196 G/A polymorphism and T2DO in all the available case-control studies on the topic published from 2002 to 2016. We considered 8 case-control studies of the BDNF 196 G/A polymorphism associated with T2DO. Results showed significant association between BDNF 196 G/A allelic polymorphism and T2DO in Asian population. The present comprehensive meta-analysis suggested that further studies focusing on larger sample-size multi-ethnicity studies with homogeneous T2DO patients and well-matched controls are needed for future study to confirm the results of the study.
