Abstract

NEXT WEEK, physicians and others will gather in the Chicago suburb of Des Plaines, Ill, for a course in using the Abbreviated Injury Scale to assess the severity of trauma from traffic violence. (Please see accompanying article.) Such courses are just one activity of the Association for the Advancement of Automotive Medicine. Founded 35 years ago by the Medical Advisory Committee to the Sports Car Club of America (six practicing physicians whose avocation was motor racing), it changed its name in 1987 from the American Association of Automotive Medicine (JAMA. 1972;219:984-990) to the present Association for the Advancement of Automotive Medicine. The association, which will hold its 36th annual scientific conference October 5 through 7 in Portland in cooperation with the Oregon Health Sciences University School of Medicine, describes itself as the only international professional multidisciplinary organization dedicated entirely to crash injury control.
