Abstract

This study evaluated the effectiveness of deployed side-impact airbags (SABs) in reducing head and thoracic injuries to front-seated occupants in side-impact motor vehicle collisions (MVCs). Introduced in the 1990s, SABs were present in approximately 85% of 2011 model year vehicles. Designed to protect specific body regions, mainly the head and thorax, during side-impact MVCs, results from previous research concerning the presence of SABs and injury risk have been varied.
