Abstract

Aim: Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is a cluster of cardiovascular risk factors and type 2 diabetes related to oxidative stress. Paraoxonase-1 (PON1) plays a protective role on low density lipoprotein (LDL) from oxidative damage. A PON1 polymorphism, C-108T (rs705379), has effect on PON1 expression. A mitochondrial superoxide dismutase (SOD2) catalyzes the dismutation of superoxide. Polymorphism rs4880 (C47T) in SOD2 results in Ala16Val that affects the mitochondrial targeting of SOD2 and its activity. A combination of these polymorphisms may have effect on pathophysiology leading to MetS. The aim of this study was to investigate the association of combined PON1 rs705379 and SOD2 rs4880 with the risk of MetS in Thais.
