Abstract

To examine the effect of a specific gene on early infant temperament, the present study investigated the effect of a functional polymorphism in the promoter region of the serotonin transporter gene (5-HTTLPR) on negative emotion and self-regulation in 280 6-month-old infants. Negative emotion and self-regulation were examined while positive and negative stimuli were presented to infants during laboratory observation. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was used to determine the 5-HTTLPR genotype. The results indicated that negative emotion was not associated with 5-HTTLPR. However, self-regulation in infants was significantly associated with 5-HTTLPR, and moderated by gender.
