Abstract
Far infrared laser lines in optically pumped CH/sub 3/CN are assigned to rotation-vibrational transitions on the basis of an analysis of available spectroscopic data. Following a review of the vibrational-rotational structure of CH/sub 3/CN, a large majority of the FIR emission is identified with vibrational-rotational transitions by means of known CO/sub 2/ IR laser pump frequencies, FIR CH/sub 3/CN lasing frequencies and the relative polarization of the pump and output beams, with Fermi and Coriolis interactions taken into account. Lines identified include all those pumped by the nu 4-0 band, four pumped by the nu 4 plus nu 8-nu 8 hot band, ten pumped by the perpendicular nu 7 band, and seven pumped by the nu 7 plus nu 8-nu 8 hot band. New values are proposed for the rotational and vibrational constants of CH/sub 3/CN, and a need for more accurate experimental measurements is pointed out.
