Abstract

Controlled rolling processes (new-CR processes) of steel manufacturing have been remarkably developed in recent years. Several kinds of Al-killed steel plate for low temperature service are manufactured by means of these processes for trial. In this study, the authors examined the toughness properties of these plates with welding joints in view of applicability for low temperature use of ship or land storage tank.As a result of this study, the following conclusions were obtained :(1) The strength and toughness of new-CR steel plates are equivalent to those of normalized or quenched and tempered steel plates, conventionally used.(2) Toughness properties of welded joints of new-CR plates are satisfactory in terms of KIC, property analysis under ship or land tank conditions as well as charpy impact energy at -60°C : welding methods examined include metal inert gas arc welding and submerged arc welding, each with the practical heat input.
