Abstract

Nineteen Thoroughbred horses were conditioned for racing using interval training (IT) methods on a high-speed equine treadmill. After twenty weeks of training, there was a significant reduction in heart rate during a sub-maximal standard exercise test (SET). This study suggests that cardio- vascular fitness could be improved solely with treadmill exercise. The treadmill has some limitations for training racehorses. However, the reduced labor requirement and freedom from weather constraints associated with treadmill training may decrease the cost and time required for a horse to attain racing fitness.
