Abstract
The effects of aluminium, lead and cadmium on the activity of human erythrocyte glutathione S-transferase (GST) have been investigated in-vitro. Erythrocytes from healthy volunteers were incubated with aluminium, lead and cadmium at various amounts (nM-mM). After erythrocyte fragments were removed by centrifugation, GST activity was measured. Aluminium exhibited a maximum inhibition of 38·13% at 45 mM. Lead showed a maximum inhibition of 85·02% at 50 mM, whereas with cadmium a maximum inhibition of 72·68% was detected at 80 mM. Our results show that very high concentrations of these metals can inhibit the activity of human erythrocyte GST. However, aluminium, lead and cadmium at blood levels which are toxic do not inhibit erythrocyte GST activity in-vitro.
