Abstract
Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the correct placement of cervical cerclage by the use of transvaginal sonography (TVS).Methods: During the past 3 years, all patients undergoing an elective cerclage between 10–15 weeks of gestation and those delivered after 34 weeks were included in the study. The parameters analyzed included: 1) cervical length before and after the cerclage, and 2) distance from the cerclage to the external os as measured in a midsagittal view. Demographics and all the data were analyzed.Results: The number of patients was 111. Mean cervical length before cerclage was 3.2 cm. Mean cervical length after cerclage was 2.6 cm. Mean distance from external os to cerclage was 1.53 cm.Conclusions: It appears that after elective placement of a cervical cerclage that delivers at/or after 34 weeks, the distance from the cerclage to the external os remains constant. This measurement of this distance might be very helpful in the assessment of the correct placement of a cervical cerclage.
