Abstract

Two types of commonly used bran-baited slug traps, namely ceramic tiles and inverted plastic plant-pot saucers, were compared. Data collected from the two trap types at two sites in 1988 and 1989 indicated that two species of Deroceras and Arion subfuscus showed a preference for saucer traps. Direct assessment of slug activity at the soil surface using infra-red time-lapse video recording gave a low correlation with assessment of activity from trap catches. The implications of these findings for the field assessment of slug activity using baited traps is discussed.
