Abstract
This study contributes to the research of lifecycle environmental impact in buildings’ passive strategies, specifically passive strategies incorporated during the energy retrofitting of residential buildings in the Mediterranean climate. With a simplified lifecycle methodology, this research considers operational and embodied energy and CO2 emissions calculations to compare the results of the two passive strategies and the existing dwelling. In a 50-year reference period, results show that the operational improvement gained with the passive strategy can be reduced or cancelled due to the consideration of the embodied energy and CO2 emissions attributed to the additional materials.
