Abstract

The good solar potential for Jordan on one hand and the price fluctuation of the fossil resources on the other hand, will drive the Jordanian government towards solar energy. The present study compares between different solar electric power technologies based on their benefits and costs. The considered solar technologies are parabolic trough and compact linear Fresnel reflector (CLFR). The main aim of this study is to provide the needed information to adopt the higher priority solar technology and to make a judgment or a decision to assist decision makers in the Jordanian energy sector to implement more comprehensive plans towards solar power plants to reduce dependency on imported oil. The criterion of the evaluation were based on different parameters, i.e., power capacity, efficiency, availability, capacity factor, storage capability, cost, maturity, water usage, land usage and safety, they were used for the near foreseen term technology. The results show that Compact Linear Fresnel Reflector (CLFR) is the best choice in terms of research and development and making more effective programs of support. It is followed by parabolic trough technology then the central receiver technology
