Abstract

The safe operation of lasers requires that permissible exposure levels be established for each laser in the various operational modes. Permissible levels are derived from threshold damage doses determined under worst-case conditions, both for the laser under study and the receptor organ. The relationship of the area of the retina irradiated, threshold criteria, and chromatic aberration to threshold damage levels is examined, as well as laser beam characteristics.
