Abstract

New olefin hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) are being blended with existing HFCs to obtain lower global warming potential (GWP) replacements for existing HFC blends. One example in this class of olefin HFC/HFC blends, R452A, is being considered for a number of refrigeration applications, especially those in which compressor discharge temperature is a primary concern. R452A provides specific environmental and safety features including: no impact to stratospheric ozone, more than 50 percent lower GWP100 (R452A GWP = 1945 compared to R404A GWP = 3943), low toxicity, and non-flammability equal to R404A (IPCC, 2013). This paper will provide an overall assessment of the application of the new olefin HFC/HFC blend refrigerant R452A in trailer, truck, and marine container refrigeration equipment. R452A system performance characteristics and Life Cycle Climate Performance (LCCP) emission profiles will be compared relative to R404A. R452 reliability indicators will be provided, including material compatibility, chemical stability, and field trial experiences.
