Abstract
In Aurangabad, lack of capital and appropriate technology for environment-friendly waste management practices has been made the dumpsite at Naregaon for the disposal of Municipal Solid Waste (MSW). Unplanned dumping leads groundwater contamination of nearby area, as rainwater percolates through MSW forms leachate that consists of decomposing organic matter combined with other heavy metals. pH, Electrical Conductivity (EC) and GIS-based spatial distribution of heavy metals such as Copper (Cu), Lead (Pb), Cadmium (Cd), Arsenic (As), Manganese (Mn) and Chromium (Cr) of Thirty (30) groundwater samples around dumping area have been determined. Based on heavy metal concentration, we concluded that our study area as a whole is critically polluted.
