Abstract

A study was carried out to evaluate and identify fourteen Tunisian fig cultivars based on morphological and chemical characters and minerals contents relating to fruits. The results were subjected to analysis of variance and multivariate analysis to evaluate diversity among cultivars and correlation within studies characters. Cultivars are mainly identified on the basis of the skin colour (Nemri, Bouholi, etc.), the shape of fruits (Boukhobza, Garghi, etc.) and the fruit taste (Bouharrag, etc.). A large variability in fruit weights and sizes is distinguished between cultivars. Fructose, glucose, potassium and calcium are the mainly sugars and minerals in fig fruits. Some morphological and chemical characters claimed a wide diversity within cultivars. This research carried out showed that certain Tunisian cultivars are particularly recommended for future selection and breeding programs.
