Abstract

The therapeutic use of estrogen and progestins in gynecologic and obstetric disorders is reviewed. The metabolism of natural estrogens estrone sulfate and synthetic estrogens their mechanism of action and relative binding effectiveness commercially available estrogenic preparations and the therapeutic use of estrogens in cases of panhypopituitarism gonadal dysgenesis menopausal syndrome anovulation inadequate cervical mucus Ashermans syndrome acne and hirsutism dysmenorrhea and excessive tallness prior to menarche as well as the metabolism of progesterone 17alpha-hydroxyprogesterone caproate and orally active synthetic progestins the mechanism of action and toxicity of progesterone and the therapeutic use of progestational drugs in cases of infertility associated with luteal phase deficiency endometriosis dysfunctional uterine bleeding dysmenorrhea precocious puberty and cancer of the endometrium are discussed.
