Abstract

Depression is the major cause of death in many developing countries. The objective of this paper is to study the depression, anxiety and stress level for adolescent female college students using self-assessment DASS-42. Also study the relationship between the genres of music listening (carnatic, Indian film, music, pop, blues and rock) and its effect on DASS score. One hundred and sixty randomly selected healthy young female students participated in this study. DASS-42 questionnaire was used for assessing the depression, anxiety and stress. The study reveals that the genre of music listening has an effect on DASS score. It is demonstrated while listening to Indian film music depression score was significantly (p < 0.05) high when compared to other types of music. Based on the results, the depression score level was significantly lower for carnatic music when compared to remaining genres. Population listening to Indian film music has more stress and depression score when compared to other styles of music.
