Abstract
The paper analyzes physical peculiarities of RBMK leading to catastrophic progression of the accident at ChNPP-4 on 26 April 1986. The modeled transient, which preceded the accident, and modeling of its first phase showed that introduction of absorbing rods into the core played a decisive role in the accident progression.
