Abstract

METHODS for assessing the fertilizing capacity of fowl semen have been limited. Spermatozoan motility is used widely as an indicator of sperm quality in large animals and man. Shaffner and Andrews (1957) studying fowl sperm motility, found significant correlations between the latter and the fertilizing capacity of the semen. In recent large scale fertility studies on commercial breeding farms practicing artificial insemination, the authors have found highly significant correlation between sperm motility and the number of fertilized eggs (unpublished data). On the other hand, it has to be admitted that the assessment of semen motility, yields results which are only partially accurate, as they are based on subjective estimation, and data recorded by different workers can seldom be reliably compared.Other methods for the evaluation of semen quality (Nigrosin-eosin staining technique, resazurin or methylene blue reduction time, etc.) are successfully used in laboratory studies and as routine procedures in many…
