Abstract

Purpose: To evaluate the changes of maximum equivalent stresses (MES) on menisci following femur structural deformities. Materials and methods: Three- Dimensional (3D) solid models were created on MIMICS® by using DICOM formatted longitudinal computed tomography scans. +10° femur neck valgus osteotomy was simulated for coxa valga and -10° varus osteotomy was simulated coxa vara. ANSYS® WorkbenchTM (Version 12) was used to analyze the stress/load distribution on menisci. Results: In the reference model, the MES on medial meniscus was 17.362 Megapascal (MPa), lateral meniscus was 8.621 MPa. The MES was measured 10.632 MPa on medial meniscus and 9.487 MPa on lateral meniscus in coxa vara model. In coxa valga simulated model the MES on medial meniscus was 6.866 MPa while lateral meniscus was 21.854 MPa.Conclusion: Maxiumum equivalent stresses on menisci were affected according to changes in mechanical axis of lower extremity due to proximal femur geometric variations.
