Abstract

Even though the values of bone mineral density (BMD) are the same, fractures occur more easily in some bone than the others, which implies that the BMD is not the sole determinant of bone strength. Bone quality has been recognized as important as bone mineral density to determine bone strength. Bone quality includes bone structure such as geometry or micro architecture, and intrinsic material properties such as microdamage, degree of mineralization, collagen cross linkage. All these factors, being controlled by bone remodeling, closely relate each other.
