Abstract

In this chapter we discuss ways in which students’ professional attitudes and behaviors are defined, taught, and assessed. Various models of professional behavior reported in the literature are identified and discussed together with pros and cons of each model. This is followed by a brief discussion of methods and approaches to teach professional attitudes and behavior. A wide range of assessment techniques are reviewed with recommendations for uses across the medical education continuum. We conclude with recommendations for future work to improve both the development of and assessment of professional attitudes and behaviors in the future.
