Abstract

A formidable task for our centers of medical learning is to educate physicians-those in training and those already practicing-as to the importance of objective medical vocational assessment. At present, the medical assessment of work potential is, at times, subjective. The circumstances under which a physician sees a patient to determine the extent of work-limiting impairment vary greatly. Establishment of causality of injury/disease, limiting assessment to what is vocationally relevant, and medical concerns of the employer may all complicate the traditional doctor-patient relationship.
