Abstract
Lexical knowledge is central to language proficiency and assessment of lexical knowledge is thus critical in research, teaching, learning, and course design. This chapter focuses on three areas of vocabulary assessment—measures of written and aural receptive vocabulary size, productive vocabulary size, and depth of lexical knowledge. The measures surveyed include the yes/no test, the Vocabulary Levels Test, the Vocabulary Size Test, graded dictation, AuralLex, the Controlled Productive Vocabulary Test, Lex30, the lexical frequency profile, lexical diversity, the Word Associates Test, the Vocabulary Knowledge Scale, and V_Links. It also looks briefly at vocabulary assessment in foreign language classrooms, and suggests eight areas where further research is needed.
