Abstract

The environment of city logistics (CL) is very challenging and continually changes since it involves urban goods distribution, last-mile activities and various stakeholders. The purpose of this study is to classify newly emerging trends in CL, particularly in the last mile, which adversely affect urban sustainability. A number of trends were identified, including growing urban population, increasing popularity of e-commerce, fast delivery of goods, and disruptive events (DEs). The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), adopted by the United Nations in 2015 that aim to improve the quality of life in different aspects, are introduced and connected to the CL concept. Finally, by reviewing the sustainability plans of Australian companies and organisations, as a case study, we practically demonstrate how different firms can incorporate sustainability into their strategic plans and prioritise their actions.
