Summary

Introduction

The aim of Ghana’s Medium Term Agriculture Sector Investment Plan [METASIP] (Ministry of Food and Agriculture [MoFA], 2010) is to modernize agriculture, which will culminate in a structurally transformed economy evident in food security, employment opportunities and poverty reduction. In terms of extreme poverty, northern Ghana accounts for 52.7% of the extremely poor in Ghana (Ghana Statistical Service [GSS], 2014) This calls for sustained growth in agriculture to tackle hunger, food insecurity and poverty. This is important because majority of Ghanaians grow and consume maize, and for that matter, any technology that would lead to an increase in productivity of inputs for maize cultivation would bring about real income gains for the rural population
