Abstract
Electrostatic eliminators are often used in locations where there are flammable vapours and this paper describes an investigation which was carried out to determine whether the electrically powered types are suitable for use in such locations. The eliminators were examined to see if they were able to produce incendive sparks and also to determine their effectiveness at removing charge from a moving charged surface. The performance of the different types of eliminator varied considerably when conditions were not ideal and an attempt has been made to establish levels of residual charge which eliminators, suitable for use in flammable atmospheres, should be able to achieve even under unfavourable circumstances. The investigation has shown that whereas some electrically powered eliminators are not suitable for use in flammable atmospheres others do not produce incendive sparking and reduce charge to an acceptably low level.
