Abstract

In this paper a method of error assessment for the finite element method is discussed. This idea is used to optimize grid refinement schemes both for singularities and also for handling unbounded regions. It is shown how those elements, or groups of elements, that make large contributions to the error term can be identified so that local grid refinements can he placed in the most advantageous regions.
