Abstract

Language delays are common among premature infants and children with hearing loss. There are multiple tools and reports for assessing language in young children. Assessing early language and providing intervention is key to improving outcomes. We conclude that utilization of a new tool, Language Environment Analysis digital language processor (LENA™), to assess the natural language environment of high-risk infants and children in a variety of settings including the neonatal intensive care unit and home, provides the opportunity to access and identify key features of the early language environment.
