Abstract

The Admiral nurses and Royal College of Nursing Gerontological Nursing Programme competencies project began in August 2000 and is a part-time, 20-month project funded by the Dementia Relief Trust. Admiral nurses are specialist dementia care nurses and the Dementia Relief Trust is a charity which supports their work. Admiral nurses' casework supports those providing care for people with dementia living in the community. In their consultancy and teaching role, Admiral nurses promote good practice in dementia care. They work in different care settings and in total there are 12 Admiral nurse services.
