Abstract

A new asphalt pavement potential damage index (APPDI) was proposed in this study. With this index, a unified mechanical potential damage model of top-down crack (TDC) and rutting of asphalt pavement is presented. With the model, the same appearance of TDC and rutting of asphalt pavement can be explained. The research results show that: 1) The principal stress distribution had great influences on the formation of TDC and rutting; 2) In the pavement surface, the principal stresses composition on the edge of wheel path was composite tension-compression mode which is likely to be the main reason of the coexist of TDC and rutting; 3) The mechanical parameters of asphalt pavement can be back-calculated from APPDI, which can be used directly as pavement designing parameters.
