Abstract
Tabor (1) has given a physicist's view of research into the basic mechanisms of friction. In the same vein the present paper gives a review of the basic mechanisms of metallic sliding friction and wear from a mechanical engineering point of view. A review of the application of asperity deformation models in building up wear maps for metallic sliding wear which can usefully be read in conjunction with parts of the present review has been given by Childs (2).
