Abstract

The economical optimization of hot forming processes requires a selection qf tool steels which is directly related to the expected impacts on the tools. The report describes the most important mechanical and thermal impact modes of forging dies and extrusion tools and derives recommendations for appropriate tool steels. The paper also focuses on two newly developed hot-work tool steels and their properties: Thyrotherm E 38 k and Thyrotherm 2999 EFS Supra. Hotwork tool steels gain their properties by a heat treatment so that this report describes the sequence of processes of such a heat treatment.
