Abstract

This article discusses aspects of the health and rehabilitation services in a rural district of Uganda. A brief review of the health system prior to and during the Idi Amin administration is given. The rural district has 1 hospital which has encountered many problems in regard to supervision corruption and administration. Since the immunization program started in this district in 1981 child morbidity has decreased considerably. A progress report is given on major encountered infections. In the district 9 dispensaries are available for immunization purposes. Yet having access to them is practically impossible during the rainy season. Traditional medicine is still in practice in this rural area. 2 examples of its practice (gum disease in children and male and female circumcision) are discussed in reference to medical complications that usually follow. An effort to supply the population with clean piped spring water is still going on with the collaboration of the Danish and Uganda Red Cross.
