Abstract

A small flume designed to assess the erodibility of soil material under known hydraulic stress is described. Calibration of the flume shows that it gives repeatable, consistent results. Erodibility tests take less than 10 minutes and no more than 100 L of water is used. Temporal variation in erodibility can be measured by monitoring soil loss during the test, and the relationship between erodibility and applied stream power can be defined by repeating the test with a range of stream powers.
