Abstract

AbstractAlthough there are multiple theories on the causes of conflict and methods of managing dispute, one factor is not explicitly discussed; grief. Just as grief attends the physical loss of a loved one, it also attends the loss associated with conflict. Whether the loss is the position as winner, partner, provider, or good neighbor, being deprived of that identity is emotionally threatening. Grief affects the persons ability to function within the resolution process. By learning to acknowledge and allow expressions of grief within the conflict process, we increase our ability to promote resolution.
